Quality data exchange and data dictionaries

Problems of defining data to be exchanged

Demonstrations and testing of the use of cfiXML for interoperability has shown that even when  collaborators have chosen the schema version to use (LT or Full), it is important to confirm the actual data  items to be exchanged.  Different organizations and domains within the capital facilities industry  use their own in-house data manipulation and storage systems, including data sheet type products and  other software applications.  When considering which data are to be exchanged, terminology and  ‘local’ practices may not coincide.  For example, individuals from different domains within the industry  may need to agree that the data item in question is the rated volumetric flow, not the normal flow.   A good solution is the creation of a data dictionary.

Example data dictionaries

cfiXML collaborators have developed data dictionaries to include:

  • details on data items required for a particular work flow process;
  • how these are represented in cfiXML.

They may also include data from real example files.  This kind of dictionary allows clear communication  between different participants in a data exchange work process and helps to ensure quality data exchange.

Collaborating organizations can develop their data dictionaries to whatever level of detail required,  for example, specifying allowable contents for pick-lists. This provides a means of further constraining  schema content for a particular work process and such a data dictionary enables application developers to build-in these constraints.

For further details, please see the Schema Guidelines.

Data Dictionary for Rotary and Centrifugal Pumps

The Hydraulic Institute (HI), FIATECH and NIST have compiled comprehensive data dictionaries to define data items which may be exchanged during centrifugal and rotary pump Bid Request For Quote (RFQ) and Bid Quote work flow processes.

The data dictionaries were produced as a major collaborative effort and the resulting standard will enable any data  exchange participant to quickly and efficiently ensure quality data exchange.

The full data dictionaries are available to HI members from the HI web page.

Note that the schema release package includes example XML files for centrifugal pumps representing Bid RFQ, BidQuote and As Built work processes.

Data Dictionary for Control Valves, Draft

A draft data dictionary has been compiled to define data items for control valves, including Motor Operated Valves (MOVs)  for the Bid Quote work flow process.

Further information and this draft data dictionary will be available shortly.

Data Dictionary for Electric Motors, Draft

A draft data dictionary has been compiled to define data items for electric motors  for the Bid Quote work flow process.

Further information and this draft data dictionary will be available shortly.
